How To Change the Default Application Thumbnails in New Facebook Timeline

by Charity on February 29, 2012

When Facebook makes changes, we all have to work a little harder to get caught up! In some cases, our business pages are caught in limbo until we modify and tweak all of the little settings.

I noticed right away that my client’s Facebook pages were going to need some work. Not just cover photos, but app images as well. We can no longer make an app a default landing tab for Facebook, so those little thumbnails are even more important if we want our visitors to click on them!

Here’s a step-by-step guide to change the default application thumbnails in the new Facebook timeline.

Step 1: View the preview of your Facebook Timeline for Pages. Take note of which applications are displaying with default images.

Step 2: Go to the Manage drop-down box at the top of your screen and click on the Edit Page link.

Step 3. Click on the Apps link on the left side of the screen.

Step 5. Click on the word Change to the right of the Custom Tab Image setting.

Step 6. Upload a new image. The image should be 111 x 74 pixels. Save the change made after uploading.

    Hi Charity,

Thanks for the great article.  I have the same question below about the photo app thumbnail.  I can’t seem to change mine.  Also, how do you go about changing the order of the apps? Thanks!

    • Charity

Jason, click the drop-down arrow to the right of the apps. Then, mouse over the app you want to move and click the little pencil (for edit). From there you should be able to rearrange the order of your apps. By default, photos is first.

      Thanks for reading and commenting!

Hi..thanks for the info.  Same question here as Jason and Bsnyder2, how can you change the photo app thumbnail so it displays the image you want?  Thanks.

The simple answer is you cannot. The most recent photo you upload will display in the photo box.

Actually it seems the most recent photo that has been uploaded and TAGGED as you is what will show in that little box. (as I never tag the photos I upload, my little photo box was showing images that others had tagged me in). I just tested this with a new photo upload and tagged as me and finally the image in that box changed.

This article is incorrect. The steps described here are used to change the application thumbnail in a single case on a single page. The way to change the _default_ thumbnail (that is, the one that shows by default on all pages containing the app) is to edit the app settings on the Facebook Devleopers site. The field will be listed as “Page Tab Image” in the Page Tab section.

There’s now an easy app for this! You can select your own image or use a pre-made background and add your own text –
